For sale here is a very scarce Paul H. Young "Encampment Special", also known as the "Boat Rod". Eight feet with two sections and two tips. Serial #3727 delivered in August of 1958. Less than 50 of this model were made by the Paul Young Rod Company, and of that number only approximately 25 were made by Paul himself. Some say this model was designed for fishing the AuSable River "hex" hatch from a boat. This rendition, the "Encampment Special", was made for Young's clients who fished the Encampment River and North Platte River in Colorado/Wyoming.
The rod is in excellent original condition and comes from the original owner, as authenticated in the Young rod ledger. All sections are full length and straight.
The rod features the handsome mottle-flamed cane Paul Young is so well known for with bronze-colored wraps and blued guides and ferrules. The script remains clean and bold written in Paul Young's hand. It reads:
"Encampment" Special - 8' - 4.56 oz. H.C.H. H.C.F.
Garrison-style hook keeper. The original cigar grip with thumb indentation has been professionally cleaned by Bob Summers. Black aluminum down-locking reel seat over a mortised cork spacer. The butt cap features the "PAUL H. YOUNG CO. DETROIT - MICH." stamp. The Super-Z brand ferrules are size 15/64 with a great fit. The rod weighs 4 1/2 oz. Mr. Summers also touched up some varnish chips on the butt section.
Very powerful parabolic action on the faster side of medium-fast. The rod can be felt flexing in the grip though I wouldn't call it overly parabolic. It loads nicely with a DT7.
Includes the original bag and tube.
Don't miss out on this rarely seen model by one of the best rodmakers of all time.
