For sale here is a Paul H Young "Barney Fisher" bamboo spinning rod. The rod has one tip as is standard with his spinning rods, is full length and original. Varnished and flamed cane.
It is common belief that "Finished by Don West" implies that Paul Young sent the blank, grip, and rod components to West for final assembly (I can't be certain of any of this however). West was noted in PHY catalogs of this time period. Script is that of Don West, noting owner name (Gordon Rupe) and date of build (12-18-55) on one flat, maker name (Paul Young) and model name (The Barney Fisher) on one flat, length (6'4) and "Finished by Don West" on one flat, and one yet another flat the phrase "Allah" be kind to me" resides.
PHY's standard gold wraps appear original and in fine condition. The ferrules fit together nicely. No ferrule clicking. It should be noted that the disc in the bottom of the male ferrule seems to be missing. I doubt this would be a serious issue if you intend to fish the rod with care, but perhaps the rod could be compromised over time if this is not addressed. The bluing on the female ferrule shows very minor age/use marks. All guides and tip-tops are secure.
The cork grip is ~10â" long and in good condition still, showing standard soiling from time on the water. Don West inked the weight of the rod (3.46 oz) on the top of the grip, consistent with his style of doing so to most of the rods he finished.
Varnish has a couple of spots/scratches but generally in fantastic shape.
There are no de-laminations and no invisible wraps on the rod. I've looked over the rod under good light and there are no seams or splinters.
I weighed it on my low-tech digital scale and the butt weighs 2.65 oz and the tip weighs 0.8 oz.
Original bag and tube.
Thanks to "quashnet" for shedding some light on PHY's relationship with Don West.
